transmit more than 600 DVDs per second
Lucent claims they have "crushed the previous data transmission record" of 14 Terabits per second. "Combined research teams from the United States and France successfully transmitted a world record 25.6 Terabits per second (Tb/s) of optical data over a single fiber strand, using 160 Wavelength-Division Multiplexed (WDM) channels."

For those of you who need a real world DVD equivalent -- that's enough bandwidth to transmit more than 600 DVDs per second.

Super Bowl Copyright weirdness
"The NFL would not let an Indianapolis church air the Super Bowl tonight because showing the game on a screen larger than 55" is considered copyright infringement. Huh? What's the reasoning behind that? Find the full article here."

Ravi Zacharias
Does anyone here listen to Ravi Zacharias? He's pretty good about common sense Christianity and I love to listen to him. I use iTunes and he has a podcast there. How many people here use iTunes? Anyway, if you don't have iTunes, you can check him out at his website: http://www.rzim.org

I have made a monumental discovery! One that could possibly change lives. Ready?
If you want to go to sleep before one in the morning, thereby making it possible to drag yourself to work on time in the morning- especially important since 'work' in this case consists of my going to my classroom at the school and getting it ready for the kids who will come to school in about nine days- don't drink 6 cans of coke that afternoon/evening.

I'm curious to know whether or not this community is still active. Some of the newer posts seem to have been made mostly by new members, generally and indication of a flagging community.
Also, are there requirements to join this community? I don't know as if I would classify myself as a geek in the popular sense- more of knowledge/book geek- a nerd, if you will.

Hey guys ^_^
Hey all, I'm Josiah, and I'm very much into both Jesus and Linux :-)
More so the former however.

I would go into a detailed mini bio on myself, but that's all on my profile already anyway, so check it out, and add me to your friends if you feel like it.
I really like this community, and plan on being an active member here.

Newbie post :)
I'm a newbie and I'm really geeky... trust me. So, I'm starting out my intro post by giving out one of my favorite christian online links. I'm an internet geek, a musician, and a writer and I hate the fact that only the few and blessed can make careers by doing what they love most. But since I spend so much time online, I thought I would share one of my fav links -- it also has a christian hotline, which I had never been able to find before I found and heard about this place.

I love this site! Oh my goodness... I had to share it with you. It also has a free christian support hotline for people aged 13-25! Thought I'd share the wonderful resource.

Please check it out if you get a chance. It is really wonderful and the owners of the site are incredible. I've been listening to them for nearly 10 years on the radio and they really care about bringing people to Christ.

Hope you enjoy this site as much as I do :)

The 4-bit faith of a Christian geek
(just wanting to add a little traffic to this community :-) )

Inspired by *Larry Wall's awesome explanation (Question 7) of the basis of his Christian faith, I began wondering about how to put my own into words. Being a technologist/geek, Larry's explanation had great appeal. I will attempt to extrapolate and incorporate his 2-qubit metaphor into my own 4-bit nybble.

* Larry Wall - the creator and spirit behind the **Perl programming language
** Perl - Practical Extraction and Reporting Language, Partially Eclectic Rubbish Lister, a.k.a. "duct tape" of the Internet

4-bits of faith... [MPAA Rating: G++ - high geekiness, binary involved]Collapse )

“Dad, has it always been this way?”

“Well, even from the beginning, men hated Jesus even though He did nothing but lobe them and teach them and heal them. They nailed Him to a cross. They thought they had killed Him but they only set Him free to live n the hearts of people like you and me who believe in Him. Then came the apostles and most of them were killed for telling other people about Jesus. So they tortured them and killed them and even left their bodies to rot as an example to other people. But the church kept right on growing, watered by the blood of these precious saints.”

“But dad, did they want to die?”

“No. They didn’t want to die. I mean, many of them had children just like you they had to leave behind. But they were forced to make a choice. They could choose to live this one life here on earth and reject Jesus and be damned or they could choose to believe in the words of Jesus and live forever.”

“I think I understand.”

“Here, maybe this will help you understand better.”

I have heard how Christians long ago
Were brought before a tyrant’s throne
And they were told that he would spare their lives
If they would renounce the name of Christ.
But one by one they chose to die
The Son of God they would not deny,
Like a great angelic choir sings
I can almost hear their voice ring.

I pledge allegiance to the Lamb
With all my strength
With all I am
I will seek to honor His commands
I pledge allegiance to the Lamb.

Now the years have come and the years have gone
But the cost of Christ still goes on
And now our time has come to count the cost
To reject this world, to embrace the cross.
And one by one let us live our lives
For the One who died to give us life
Till the trumpet sounds on the final day
Let us proudly stand and boldly say

I pledge allegiance to the Lamb
With all my strength
With all I am
I will seek to honor His commands
I pledge allegiance to the Lamb.

To the Lamb of God who bore my pain
Who took my place, who wore my shame
I will seek to honor His commands
I pledge allegiance to the Lamb.

“You’ve got to remember that it wasn’t always this way. I mean, my dad could even pray in school. Of course, they took that away from him. Then it became incorrect for us to believe in the Bible and after that they just stripped our right to worship away from us and we quietly stood by. But son, I hope that you’re never put in the position that you have to choose between your faith and your life. But if you are - I know which choice you’re going to make, because I know that Jesus lives inside of you. In the meantime, just pray like taught you how to and take care of your mom and remember that God Is the Father of the fatherless.”

I pledge allegiance to the Lamb
With all my strength
With all I am
I will seek to honor His commands
I pledge allegiance to the Lamb.
